COVENANT

Knowing God—His Relationship with His People

Throughout the Bible, God related to His people by establishing covenants with them. The original Hebrew word used for covenant is mentioned 286 times in the Old Testament alone and literally means “an agreement” or “a treaty.” Unfortunately, most Christians have not studied this important bond between God and humanity.

Covenant traces God’s redemptive plan for us from the Old Testament covenant with the patriarchs to the new covenant ushered in by Jesus Christ. It focuses on God’s faithfulness, judgment, forgiveness, and sovereignty. Students will discover that they can only know God through a covenant relationship. They will be challenged to build their lives on His covenant promises.

What does the Covenant Bible Study cover?

Covenant begins with God’s covenant in Eden and concludes with the perfection of His covenant designs in the person of Jesus Christ. Along the way, Covenant covers a variety of other lessons, including:
  • How God relates to His people through covenants,
  • God’s covenants with Noah, Abraham, and David,
  • God’s faithfulness to us through His covenant,
  • Our love for Christ and other people,
  • The importance of marriage as a model of covenant commitment.

What can your students get out of it?

Your students will be exposed to the remarkable story of God’s covenant in a variety of ways. As they journey throughout the year, your students will be challenged to learn with their heads, their hearts, and their hands.

Your students will constantly be challenged to learn about God’s covenant with their head—to learn what they need to know about living in a covenant relationship. This type of learning is all about a basic understanding of Scripture. But students will be challenged to go beyond simple understanding, moving to application of what they have learned.

Your students will also be challenged to learn about God’s covenant with their hearts—to allow God to transform their feelings as they look at His Word. What your students know about God and how He has relentlessly sought out His people should affect them emotionally, not just mentally; they should learn to value the things of God.

Occasionally, your students will be challenged to learn with their hands—to learn what they should be able to do as a result of their understanding of God’s covenant relationship with them. Students will be able to apply a specific skill or discipline after studying God’s covenant.

Your students will have a more confident faith as they learn the value of living in covenant relationship with God.
